And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Moreover whom he didpredestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Romans 8: 28-30

We now move on to the second aspect of this great purpose of God, namely, that which has reference to the Son Himself - ‘That he might be the firstborn among many brethren’. The term ‘firstborn’ provides at once the key to what the Apostle is saying. The ‘firstborn’ is always in a position of pre-eminence. That was a great characteristic of family life in Israel as seen in the Old Testament. The firstborn was always in a very special position of privilege, and unusual respect had to be paid to him. So the Apostle says that the glory of the Son is shown in the fact that He is ‘the firstborn among many brethren’.

It is most important that we should look at our salvation from this standpoint. We must not only think of it in terms of ourselves, but we must realize that God’s ultimate object in ever planning and introducing the scheme of salvation is to glorify His Son. We have already had occasion to emphasize this aspect of the matter in previous expositions, but we are compelled to do so again. We must realize - and there is nothing so comforting as this, nothing so assuring - that the very honour and glory of the blessed Holy Trinity is involved in our ultimate complete salvation. As the chief purpose of salvation is to glorify the Son of God, and as He is the ‘firstborn among many brethren’, the resulting position if He had no ‘brethren’ at all, and none to follow
